Frequently asked questions
Why is temperature converted differently?
The other categories are simple ratios, but Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so the conversion needs an offset as well as a factor. That is also why you cannot convert a temperature difference the same way as a temperature.
Is a kilobyte 1000 or 1024 bytes?
This tool uses 1024, which is what operating systems report. Storage manufacturers use 1000, which is why a "1TB" drive shows as about 931GB — the same bytes, counted differently.
Which gallon is used?
The US gallon, at about 3.785 litres. The imperial gallon used in the UK is about 4.546 litres — a 20% difference that matters a great deal for fuel economy figures.
