Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the United States, 15–20% is standard for table service and less for counter service. Much of Europe includes service and a small round-up is enough. Japan, Korea and China do not tip at all, and it can cause confusion.
Should the tip be on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Convention is pre-tax, but most people tip on the total because it is what is printed. On a typical bill the difference is small; on a large one it is worth a moment’s thought.
Is service charge the same as a tip?
No. A service charge is added by the restaurant and may not reach the staff. Where one already appears on the bill, an additional tip is optional — check the small print.
