What counts as a word?
Five characters, including spaces — the standard convention. It keeps the measure fair regardless of whether the passage uses long or short words.
What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 wpm is average, 60–70 is a competent touch typist, and above 90 is fast. Professional transcriptionists work above 100 — but at 98% accuracy or better.
How do I get faster?
Stop looking at the keyboard, even though it is slower at first. Accuracy comes before speed: every mistake costs more time to fix than it saved. Speed follows once the movements are automatic.
