Frequently asked questions
Why does location data matter?
GPS coordinates in a photo are accurate to a few metres. A handful of photos taken at home, posted publicly, pins your address exactly. It is one of the most common ways people expose more than they intended.
Do social networks strip it for me?
Most large platforms do strip EXIF on upload, but not all, and not always for every upload path. Direct messaging apps, email attachments, cloud drive links and file transfers usually preserve it completely.
Does removing metadata change the image?
The picture is re-encoded, so there is a very small quality change, but the pixels and dimensions stay the same. What disappears is the descriptive data attached alongside them.
