Frequently asked questions
How accurate is IP geolocation?
Country level is right around 95% of the time. City level is far less reliable — the data comes from provider registrations, so an address may resolve to a regional hub hundreds of kilometres from the actual user.
What is an ASN?
An Autonomous System Number identifies the network operator that announces the address block. It is a more reliable way to identify who runs a network than the free-text organisation name.
Can I identify a person from an IP address?
No. It identifies a network connection, and only the provider can link it to a subscriber — normally requiring a legal order. Shared addresses, carrier-grade NAT and VPNs make the association weaker still.
