A favicon is not one file any more. Browsers want 16 and 32 pixels, iOS wants 180, Android wants 192 and 512, and each expects to find them a particular way. Upload one square image and get the whole set with the markup to match.
How to use
- 1 Drop in a square image, ideally 512px or larger.
- 2 By default the centre is cropped to a square — turn that off if you want the whole image squashed to fit.
- 3 Press generate.
- 4 Download the ZIP and paste the HTML snippet into the head of your pages.
Frequently asked questions
What size should the source image be?
At least 512×512 and square. The 16px version is generated by scaling down, so a small or rectangular source produces mushy icons. Simple, bold shapes survive the shrink far better than detailed artwork.
Do I still need favicon.ico?
Rarely. Every current browser reads PNG icons from link tags. Keep the .ico only if you must support very old Internet Explorer, or if something in your stack looks for it at the site root by convention.
What is site.webmanifest for?
It tells Android and Chrome which icons to use when someone adds your site to their home screen, along with the app name and theme colour. Without it, Android falls back to a screenshot of the page.
